Preview features

About this tool

Open a Markdown (.md) document or start typing, see the preview update as you write, and download the result as a .md or HTML file. GitHub-style syntax such as tables, task lists, strikethrough and footnotes is shown as it will appear.

Your document is processed only on this device, and the text you are writing is autosaved only in this browser. If you like, turn on a code editor with line numbers and syntax colors, and choose code colors, math and diagrams for the preview.

How to use

  1. Click “Open file” or drop a .md file onto the editor. To start fresh, just type in the editor.
  2. Add formatting with the toolbar buttons or shortcuts (Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Ctrl+K link). The preview updates as you type.
  3. For line numbers and syntax colors, turn on “Code editor”. Below the preview, choose “Code colors”, “Math” and “Diagrams”.
  4. Save with “Download .md” or “Download HTML”.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my text saved?

It is autosaved only inside this browser and never sent to a server. On a shared computer, click “Delete saved text” or turn off “Autosave in this browser”.

Images from other websites do not show up.

Loading an image from another server tells that server the IP address of the device that opened the document and when, so the preview does not load external images at first. Click “Load external images” to load them for the current document only.

Some characters look garbled.

Older text files are sometimes saved in a legacy encoding such as Windows-1252. If a file cannot be read as UTF-8, it is read again in that encoding. Downloaded .md files are saved as UTF-8, and the original line endings (CRLF or LF) are kept.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens inside the browser you are using right now. Your files are never sent anywhere, so no copy of your photos or documents is left on someone else's server.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, and no sign-up or login is needed. Just open the page and start.
